When we experience a traumatic event, our physiology reacts accordingly, so we can "fight the tiger". More than 1,500 biochemical responses occur in our bodies to help us survive. For some, these responses don’t turn off when the event is over. Their systems seem unable to let go of their defenses and begin functioning in a constant state of "fight or flight".
